PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Carers

“Human dignity is the same for all human beings: when I trample of the dignity of another, I am trampling on my own.”

Pope Francis

Last night the Community Council met. Addressing the council was Sr Noelene Quinanne and Toni Lebroy, both of whom work for Catholic Care. Sr Noelene specifically works for Mackillop House, a residential unit in Lyneham that houses homeless women, including those with families. Often the residents are fleeing domestic violence or other fraught domestic circumstances. Their input broadened our understanding of the services that the Church provides in Canberra and their work is based in Catholic social teaching, at the heart of which resides the unshakeable conviction of the dignity of all human beings. Both Sr Noelene’s and Toni’s input was invaluable and we have the opportunity, as the wider school community, to consider how we can best help and support this very important ministry.

School Disco

We are keenly anticipating our Term Two disco that will be held on Friday, May 28 Week 6. Our DJ, Jungle Jerry, has been busy collating playlists of classics which promise a little something for everyone. With talent like this in store, our disco promises to be a memorable night.  If you would like to contribute songs to the playlist, please fill out this Google form https://forms.gle/GjxsxEJVYVFGywpM9

Tickets will be available next week on Qkr! A $5 ticket will include Sausage, Drink & Treat. Students will get a token at the door to receive their Food and Drink.

Session times will be the same as previous years in the Hall:

6.30 – 7.15 pm   Kinder, 1, 2

7.30 – 8.30 pm Years 3-6

The Community Council is coordinating the disco. We also require some volunteers for the night. If you are able to assist in anyway, please contact the Chair of Community Council, Thomas Mulligan, or contact the front office.

Confirmation

Last night the Parish of the Transfiguration held the Information Night for the Sacrament of Confirmation for all students in Year 6 who are making their Confirmation this year. As is the case each year, it is a joint sacramental occasion, held with the students and families from Holy Trinity at Curtin. I wish all our boys and girls the very best as they embark on this very special journey and step in their lives. My thanks to our Year 6 teachers, Paul Jenkins and Sarah Kennelly, for their support of our students, and Fron Garrett-Rumba, our acting REC, Fr John Woods, our Parish Priest, and all families, on whose shoulders we stand.

Catholic Schools’ Week and Enrolment

This week is Catholic Schools’ Week and is a feature of the enrolment period. Sts Peter and Paul celebrated the occasion by inviting parents in to have lunch with their students on Monday. My thanks to those parents who were able to attend; it was a very good experience for all concerned. Enrolments continue to come in for Kindergarten, which is very encouraging, and I ask all returning families to submit an application by the end of May. Today we held our fourth Open Morning, which was very well attended. Our final Open Morning is next Monday, from 9am – 11am.

NAPLAN

Next week is NAPLAN week for our Years 3 and 5 students. NAPLAN was effectively cancelled across Australia last year, due to COVID-19, and so in a sense we are resuming our practice. The students will be tested in Maths, reading, writing, spelling and grammar. I wish all of our students the very best as they sit the tests and I thank our Years 3 and 5 teachers for their support, and Sean Rutledge for coordinating NAPLAN.

Mothers’ Day

Next Sunday is Mothers’ Day and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our mums the very best for Sunday and a very happy Mothers’ Day. Thank you for the many, many ways you support the school and of course for what you contribute to the lives of the children whom you love so very much. We are having a ‘Donuts for Mum’ at the drop-off drive through in the morning, so if there is any opportunity for you to drop off your son or daughter, I encourage you to do so. In addition, each child will bring home a small present. Happy Mothers’ day to all of our mums.

Have a wonderful week with your families.

Best wishes

Cameron Johns
