THE KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM

The Kitchen Garden Program

Welcome to another year with Sts Peter and Paul and our Kitchen Garden Program. This is a unique program that joins together our kitchen and garden with what children learn in the curriculum. We are super excited to be back this term and we have many projects happening in our kitchen, garden and classrooms.

Years 1 and 2 are spending some time in the kitchen learning about Food Science and the Five Food Groups. We are focusing on one group per week as well as learning great skills such as kitchen safety, chopping and the importance of washing up.

This week in the kitchen our Year 1 and 2’s picked some cherry tomatoes from our garden. They found this very exciting and learnt that the red ones were the best and why (because they have loads of nutrients) and the green ones needed a little bit more time with the “mother tree”. Much laughter and smiles were had when the children found that if they pressed too hard while holding or cutting the tomatoes, the seeds would burst out – EVERYWHERE!! The children made wraps and vegetable dips with crudités and pita crisps. Check out the Maths patterns below. Also, let me know if you would like any of the recipes.

In the classroom the children are learning more about the food groups during their health units – Making Healthy Food Choices in Year 1 and Health Messages in Year 2. What they are learning ties in beautifully with what they have seen, picked, chopped and eaten in the kitchen and garden.

Our Year 6 students are helping with our composting and collecting it from outside the classrooms each week. Thanks Year 6. Our worms are super happy!
