This year at Sts Peter and Paul, I have been lucky enough to be working with a small group of Year 5 and Year 6 students in the area of Mathematics Enrichment. The group has been such a productive and rewarding part of my week, I wanted to share with the whole school community a little more about what we do.  

Every week, alongside the curriculum taught by their classroom teachers, I work with the students on extending and enriching their Mathematical skills and understanding. We work primarily in pairs or small groups, solving complex problems and tackling questions that they may not regularly be exposed to in a Year 5/6 classroom.  

Recently, the group participated in the Australian Maths Trusts’ ‘Australian Maths Competition’, and as a school, we received some fantastic results. Many children were awarded a Credit, which is very impressive. Ava T was awarded a Distinction, and Zoe T a Prize award (given to the top student locally for this age-group).   

Following on from that success, 2 of our Year 6 students, Ava and Zoe, took part in the month-long Australian Maths Challenge, where they both exceeded expectations by each receiving a Distinction. Congratulations to Zoe, Ava, and all the students who are part of the Maths Enrichment Team. I am so proud of the mathematicians you are, and the amazing work you do every week – Keep it up!
