Sunday Gospel: Luke 12:49-53, Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C

The Gospel this week is not an easy one to hear. When we hear this Gospel, we are unable to think of Jesus as simply the gentle messiah who came to spread peace throughout the world. 

Jesus reminds us all that faith is not always comforting or comfortable, particularly if that faith is at odds with the surrounding culture. Faith calls for real choices about how we live, what we buy, where we shop, whom we vote for, and such choices will cause conflicts with those who think differently.

While Jesus himself may have been a man of peace, the message that he proclaimed was clearly divisive. He made demands on people that challenged them to the very heart of their being.
