Family Prayer for this week…
Jesus,
You are always ready to make time for others,
especially those who come to you
with no worries or troubles.
Thank you for your love and goodness,
and help me to remember to make time to be
in your presence.
Amen.
Gospel Reflection…
Mark 1:29-39
This week’s Gospel continues on from last week’s Gospel, which recounts an important day within Jesus’ ministry. Leaving the synagogue, Jesus goes to Simon Peter’s house and cures Simon’s mother-in-law, who is ill with a fever. He then extends his healing activity to the whole town, before re-launching his mission on a wider scale. Simon’s mother-in-law is in bed with a fever, a more threatening condition in those days but not necessarily something out of the ordinary. The language in which the healing action of Jesus is described, ‘He came and took her by the hand and raised her up’ echoes the language of the resurrection. Here it certainly signals her complete restoration to health. At the same time, the language used (diakonein) seems to foreshadow the ‘service’ (diakonia) that Jesus himself will provide as the Son of Man who has come ‘not to be served but to serve. The healing of Simon’s mother-in-law thus anticipates the ministry that disciples, who have experienced the healing and reconciling power of Jesus, will go on to do in his name. This Gospel is particularly relevant to our global and national situation and reminds us to seek the support of God during this challenging time. It also reminds us to give thanks for the healthcare workers and all those throughout the world who are caring for the ill and working to find a solution.
