Dear Parents and Carers
NAPLAN
This week, on Thursday, our students in Years 3 & 5 will undertake a NAPLAN practice test, in preparation for NAPLAN itself, which takes place in early May. The students will sit one practice test, which will be an ‘omnibus test’, that is, it will contain a little bit of all the tests: Maths, reading, writing, grammar and spelling. Aside from giving the students an experience of the test genre (multiple choice and largely online), it will also test the school’s readiness, in terms of its technology and capacity. The children’s results from this practice day bear no relation to their actual result in May.
Enrolment – 2023
It seems we have only just started the year, and already the enrolment period for next year is looming on the school calendar. The official enrolment period for all Catholic schools begins in the second week of May. This week, we welcome Michael Lee, Principal at St Mary Mackillop College, to our school. On Friday, Mr Lee will visit the Year 6 students and talk with them about life at Mary Mackillop. Michael is a very engaging speaker and our students will enjoy his visit. Next term, St Clare’s College and Merici College will also visit the school.
School Photos
A reminder for all of our parents that next Monday, we are having our School Photos. Class and individual photos will be taken. Students are required to wear their full summer uniform. I am aware that many students have been away over the last few weeks, due to health concerns of one kind or another. Please be assured that if your son or daughter is absent on Monday, the photographers will be returning to the school to take further individual photos. Please contact the school if you have any questions.
Easter Liturgies
The first week of the holidays is Holy Week, culminating in Good Friday and Easter Sunday on the middle weekend of the holidays. Sts Peter and Paul will be celebrating the Easter story next week, with all grades assigned a segment of the event of Easter Week. In normal times, these elements of the Easter story will be told in dramatic form in front of the whole school and parents, but as we still have restrictions in place, they are being told and filmed or shared with the school via video or another method. The students will have the opportunity to experience a recount of the events in Jesus’ life that led to his crucifixion and resurrection. The use of story and drama are powerful ways to engage students (and people of all ages) with meaning and purpose. My thanks to Steph Burns, our Religious Education Coordinator and all teachers, for their hard work and support.
Have a wonderful week with your families.
Best wishes
Cameron Johns
Principal
This year at Sts Peter and Paul, we are all called to ‘Let Your Light Shine”
Sacrament of Reconciliation 2022 & Presentation Masses
Last Saturday marked the beginning of the Sacrament of Reconciliation for our Candidates. Congratulations to the students and their families at this special time.
I had a wonderful time with the Year 3 children and Reconciliation Candidates last Friday at our Retreat. We engaged in times of prayer and reflection, as well as games and creative roleplays. Thank you to our Youth Minister Maddie for her support on the day.
You can also double-check your child’s name on the online booking sheet to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation here.
REMINDER: Parents of candidates for the sacrament of Reconciliation must forward a copy of their child’s Baptism certificate to the Parish Office if their child was Baptised outside of Transfiguration Parish. Thank you.
Project Compassion 2022
The Theme this year is “For all Future Generations”. Our support of Caritas Australia this Lenten season will help support vulnerable people around the world, now and For All Future Generations. Each class has been given a Project Compassion box that will allow students to donate money to Caritas over the Season of Lent. We encourage you to discuss this with your child and consider allowing your child to make a donation to the box that is on their classroom prayer table or alternatively make a donation on the Qkr! App under the school payments section.
Fifth Sunday of Lent Year C . John 8:1-11
This entire scene is a conspiratorial ‘set-up’ to trap Jesus. Jewish law dictated that adultery was to be punished by death for both parties. However, the Roman occupation had forbidden the Jewish authorities to carry out the death penalty. By bringing the woman to Jesus they sought to place him in a no-win situation. If he upheld the Jewish law and ordered the death penalty, then he was flaunting Roman law. If he did not uphold the law then he could be branded as a false teacher. They thought it was a perfect trap!
But where is the man with whom the woman was committing adultery? When he is not also brought forward for judgment as any legitimate accusation would demand, Jesus senses the trap being set for him. He realises that those accusing the woman must have somehow been involved in setting her up so that she could be ‘caught committing adultery’. In Jewish law, accessories to a crime were equally guilty and subject to the same penalty. When Jesus says to the gathering, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned …,’ he’s letting them know that he’s aware of their part in this crime and what judgment is due them also! If they persist with their accusation, they’ll also be tried as accessories! So they quietly walk away.
Jesus’ words to the woman sum up his message throughout the Gospel: ‘Neither do I condemn you, go away, and don’t sin any more.’ As with others in the gospels, Jesus recognises that the woman has indeed sinned, but he does not condemn her for it. By telling her not to sin any more he is calling her to conversion. He is saying, yes, you’ve made mistakes, but you can do better and I’m challenging you to try.

Blessings for the week ahead,

Last week the Kinder continued with their food science journey, learning about play doh. They also learnt how to take turns, listen, stir and mix. They also had some practice using their fine motor skills to make objects out of the play doh. Many happy faces could be seen.
The Year 2 students continued learning about how food affects your body in different ways.
Our garden is growing well. We still have tomatoes and cucumbers growing and our carrots are settling in well.
