Dear Parents and Carers
The end of another term has arrived. It has been a very successful term, with many good things happening around student learning and achievement, and a special feature of the term has been the gradual easing of restrictions, in terms of the school being able to engage again with wider society in the form of excursions and the like. I would like to thank the staff of the school for their constant and unwavering support of the students and their wellbeing. It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated and professional group of people, and they all contribute enormously to the life and lifeblood of the school. I wish them all a very good break over the next two weeks.
Similarly, I would like to thank the parent community for their excellent support and good wishes. We are very fortunate as a school community to have such a supportive parent base. I wish all families a very happy and enjoyable holiday period.
Reports
Our K – 6 reports will be published and made available, online via Compass, today. The reports will include grades for all subjects that were assessed and include comments. The teachers have spent a considerable amount of time preparing and writing the reports and I would like to thank them for their efforts. My thanks, as well, to the parents who met with teachers, over the last two weeks, to discuss their child’s progress (meetings were optional).
Sts Peter and Paul Feast Day
Today we celebrated our annual Feast Day, which is held in honour of our two patrons, St Peter, and St Paul. We celebrated a whole school Liturgy in the school hall, at 12pm. After recess, children were placed in vertical groups (that is, multiage) and enjoyed being with a different teacher and participating in different activities for the afternoon. My group was made up of children from Grades 2 – 6, who wished to play Chess. This will lead us to form a Chess club for Term 3 onwards.
Industrial Action – School Operations
Yesterday I sent an email to all parents, informing the parent body that Sts Peter and Paul will be open tomorrow, with all classes being taught and catered for. There is no need for any parent to keep his or her child at home.
Next Term – Reminders
A reminder that the first day back for students is Tuesday, July 19. The first day back sees all children have an incursion, with Musica Viva visiting the school. At the end of the week, children from our school will be attending the annual NAIDOC Week Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral, and the following Tuesday, July 26th, there is Parent Information Night for parents of children in Year 4 who are making their First Communion this year.
Have a wonderful holiday break with your children. I thank the parent body for their great support of Sts Peter and Paul this semester.
Best wishes
Cameron Johns
Principal
This year at Sts Peter and Paul, we are all called to ‘Let Your Light Shine”
Sts Peter and Paul Feast Day 2022
Today is the Feast Day of Sts Peter and Paul, and a wonderful day was had by all! At 12pm we celebrated with a Liturgy in the school Hall. Mrs R very kindly provided everyone with a hot dog (and a treat!) for lunch, and in the afternoon, each teacher ran a different, fun activity in their classrooms that the children were able to choose from. It was a wonderful day together, and a great way to celebrate our patron saints.
A big thank you to our very generous families who donated to the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. As you would have seen in the school’s foyer, the families of Sts Peter and Paul have donated many good quality items that will be appreciated by those less fortunate than us in our local area. Mrs Moore has also been working tirelessly with classes to prepare baked goods that are being donated to the Night Patrol Van. Thank you to all for your generosity and kindness!
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C
The first thing that is striking about this gospel passage is the fact that there are 72 disciples whom Jesus sends out on mission. We can have an image of Jesus strolling around Galilee with just a small group of followers but this passage makes it clear that a significant number of people were engaged in his ministry. And the gospel writer has not just made an error in naming 72 rather than the Twelve because just one chapter earlier the Twelve were sent out. This sending out to mission is a significant element of the gospel of Luke. The first sending of the Twelve represents the mission to the Jews – the twelve tribes of Israel are frequently used symbolically to represent all of the Jewish people. The sending of the 72 then represents the mission beyond the Jewish people to all nations and all people.
Another theme that is significant in the gospel of Luke is the message of hospitality. Jesus teaches on it frequently and tries to convey a message that the hospitality of God is available to all. In the sending of both the Twelve and the 72, Jesus tells them to take nothing with them for the journey. He is telling them to rely on the hospitality of strangers. If they are welcomed and shown hospitality then they are to bless the household and carry out their ministry. The ability to show hospitality to the messengers of God is a sign that the household will welcome the message of God. However, wherever they do not receive hospitality they are to leave the town, shaking the dust from their feet, as their ministry will not be welcomed by people who are not ready to hear it. It is an excellent message about not wasting your efforts in unproductive ways – not hitting your head against a brick wall!

Musica Viva incursion next term!
On Tuesday of Week 1 next term (the first day of Term 3), Sts Peter and Paul is welcoming the Torres Strait Island performance group, Wyniss, to our school hall for two performances. Wyniss will be sharing their culture with us through song, dance and storytelling.
Every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 has been preparing for Wyniss’ visit by learning a few songs and dance moves. This will explain why many excited children may have come home with a string in their pocket to share with you how they can now make a spear out of string as well as a few extra tricks the students have excitedly taught each other on the playground.
As Music is embedded in culture, our Torres Strait music exploration has included looking at the games and past times of children in the Torres Strait. Your children may come home and interview you about games you played as children. Items you might like to discuss with your children are:
Did you play string figure games?
Did you play with spinning tops?
Were there other games you played?
What skills were being practised in these games?
Did songs accompany these games?
I look forward to updating you on the performances next term!

What a great term in the kitchen and garden. We have achieved a lot and Kinder and Year 1 and 2 have learnt all about healthy eating with the Five Food Groups (GO, GLOW and GROW) and where their food comes from.
Year 2 spent this week in the kitchen and garden looking at how carrots grow, harvesting them and then cooking with them - paddock to plate style at Sts Peter and Paul!!
Our garden club was full of energy as we watered, weeded and then harvested our carrots. There was one particular carrot that gave our young Year 1 students the biggest smiles. I wonder if you can see it?
Next term Years 3 and 4 have their turn in the kitchen and we have lots of projects planned for our Garden Club Crew.
For more information about the Kitchen Garden Program please email Mrs Katie Birch at katherine.birch@cg.catholic.edu.au.
