Dear Parents and Carers
Book Week
This week we have celebrated Book Week, which culminated on Thursday with a day of book-themed activities and a book week costume parade. The children had a wonderful day and the joys of books, and reading, were appropriately celebrated. Thank you to all parents for the efforts you went to for your children’s costumes; I know that it is not always easy. Our costume parade was much fun and the children – and the staff, too – looked spectacular. My thanks to Amanda Basedow, our excellent Librarian, for her wonderful job in coordinating the week, and my thanks to all staff for their support of the week.
14th Class
It is always around this time of year that schools receive word of their staffing allocation for the following year. I am very pleased to say that we have been given a 14th class for 2023, meaning that the school will now be a two-stream school, from Kindergarten – Grade 6. Specifically, this means that next year, we will have two Year 3 Classes and two Year 4 classes. Grades 3 & 4 will not be combined. This is excellent news for the school and very positive.
Visioning Sts Peter and Paul
On Wednesday, I sent a link out via Compass to all parents, asking for their input into a short questionnaire. I am seeking input from parents to further refine our direction for the next 10 years. The staff have begun this process and the parish and students will also be consulted. The link for parents can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/17rUADUJnQ4dVbhQJnBQ1RapApAEfnZnVRO6W3cHN9zo/edit
Presentation Mass
This weekend, many of our students in Year 4 are taking a step closer to making their First Eucharist, when they attend one of the Presentation Masses that are taking place over Saturday and Sunday. The Presentation Masses reaffirm a student’s commitment, together with that of his or her whole family. Being presented to the parish is also an acknowledgement that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, which in this instance is our parish community. I congratulate all our students for this further step in their faith journey.
Father’s Day
Sunday week, September 4th, is Father’s Day. Accordingly, next Friday, September 2, we are having ‘Donuts for Dad’ at morning carline. We look forward to seeing as many of our dads as possible at morning drop off and honouring and thanking them for the wonderful presence they bring into the lives of their children.
Have a wonderful week with your families.
Best wishes
Cameron Johns
Principal
This year at Sts Peter and Paul, we are all called to ‘Let Your Light Shine”
Presentation Masses for First Eucharist Candidates
This weekend, the 2022 Candidates for First Eucharist will be presented to our Parish Community. The Candidates may be presented at any of the three Masses over the weekend. (Saturday 6:00 pm, Sunday 9:30 am, and Sunday 5:30 pm). There is no need to book for these Masses.
Celebration of First Eucharist
Parents that have enrolled their child in the Sacrament of First Eucharist will need to nominate a weekend Mass (Sat. 6pm, Sun. 9.30am or Sun. 5.30pm) on the weekend of 17-18 September for the celebration. There will be a limited number of seats available for candidates, their families and guests, mindful of the need to accommodate other parishioners at each of these Masses.
Please click here to nominate your child for a Mass.
Enquiries can be directed to the Parish Office (6281 3999 / wodennorth@cg.org.au ).
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Gospel Reflection
In the gospel of Luke, Jesus is accused of eating with sinners and tax collectors (Lk 15) and we have an image of Jesus as always eating with the marginalised. However, today’s gospel account is a more common occurrence: Jesus eating with a leading Pharisee and people of social importance. Although Jesus is depicted as frequently dining in the houses of these well-to-do people, he was probably never invited a second time! As in today’s account, Jesus made a habit of accepting the hospitality of such people and then giving them a lecture about how they should behave and reminding them who was not gathered around the table with them. Certainly the sort of actions that don’t see too many follow-up invitations!
The message he dishes out to the Pharisees on this occasion is about not thinking you’re more important than you really are. He tells them that it is far better to assume a lower status and to be lifted to greater prominence than it is to assume too much and have to be asked to step down to your proper status. In first century Jewish society, eating was as much a political act as it was a social one. Who you ate with was a reflection of your social and political position. To be invited to the head of the table would reflect very positively on a guest whilst being asked to assume a lower seat would be humiliating.
Jesus’ final teaching in this account would have been outrageous to his audience. The thought of inviting to a meal people who were in no position to reciprocate was absolutely ridiculous. But Jesus encourages his audience to give to those who cannot repay – to be graciously generous just as God gives without expecting anything in return.

Have a blessed week,

SCHOOL FEES
A friendly reminder that Term 3 Fees are due on Wednesday, 31st August. Your prompt attention to this matter is appreciated.
Thank you.
This video provides advice on what precautions to take during magpie swooping season
Magpies can swoop from July through to December (usually for about 8 weeks) during the spring while they build nests, lay and protect eggs and raise nestling and fledgling birds. Not all magpies will swoop but some will as a natural instinct to protect their territory (area around their nest) and their young.
People can protect themselves from swooping birds by:
- walk through the bird's territory quickly, don't run
- take a different route next time
- protect your head with an umbrella, hat or helmet
- wear glasses to protect your eyes
- watch the birds while walking away quickly from the area - magpies are less likely to swoop if you look at them
- protect your pet and do not leave them alone or off-lead in an area with a swooping bird
- don't let your pet attack birds as this may trigger swooping
- attach a flag or streamers on a stick to your bike or backpack and
- walk your bike through the bird's territory, don't ride.
All native birds, their eggs, young and their nests are protected by the Nature Conservation Act 2014 and the Animal Welfare Act 1992. It is illegal to interfere with them in any way. The ACT Parks and Conservation Service have a policy to manage swooping birds which takes into account legislation and public safety.
For further information visit the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate website or phone the Access Canberra Contact Centre - 13 22 81 to report a swooping bird.
Due to our fun and fabulous Book Week activities yesterday, we have postpopned our Awards Assembly until next Thursday, 1 September.
Noah B (6M) is raising money for cancer research through Variety and has made the decision to make a difference by cutting and donating his hair to be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to cancer. He was inspired to raise money after recently losing someone in his family to cancer. The haircut is booked for Thursday, 8 September!!

SCIENCE DAY – Wednesday 14th September, 2022
Sts Peter & Paul will be celebrating our ‘Annual Science Day’ on Wednesday 14th September, 2022.
In class groups, students will participate in a variety of engaging science activities.
Keeping with tradition, our Year 6 students will lead the experiments with teacher support and supervision.
The theme for this year is “Glass: More than meets the eye.” Students are invited to dress as scientists/inventors for the day.
Activities include:
Storm in a Saucer
Erupting Lemon Volcano
Plastic Bag Parachutes
Air Cannons
Invisible Ink
IMPORTANT: In preparation for Science Day, we need your help to send in recycled materials for the activities we will be conducting. If you have any of these materials that you were going to throw out anyway, could you please send them to school with your child.
Here is a list of materials that we will need to make our annual Science Day a success: plastic shopping bags; clean small soft drink bottles without labels (coke, fanta, lemonade, etc); and cardboard cylinders/rolls.
Students are also invited to enter our Balloon Car Competition. The Balloon Car Competition is a new addition to our Science Day Activities. There will be prizes for each Stage within the school. Please refer to the Balloon Car Information Sheets for details.
For ideas and activities to try at home, please see Questacon’s activity page
