Dear Parents,
Yesterday one of our parents performed a random act of kindness that I believe is indicative of the great community we have at our school. Most of you know that we have a School Crossing Supervisor out the front of the school who ensures our students can cross the road safely each day. Our Crossing Supervisor came into the office yesterday to let me know that one of our parents had taken time out of their day to bring him a hot drink and thank him for the work he is doing in the community. To whoever the parent was thank you for being such a kind, considerate and caring member of our school community. Your random act of kindness has not gone unnoticed!
Feast Day
On Friday we have our Feast Day, which is a huge event for the school. On June 29 each year the Church celebrates the feast day of Saints Peter & Paul. As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of celebrating the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day. Together, the two saints are the founders of the Church in Rome, which came about through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there. St Peter was crucified and buried on Vatican Hill, and St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican is built over his tomb.
On Friday, we will be celebrating Mass at 12 pm in the church, all members of the school community are welcome to join us. Students will receive a sausage sizzle lunch on Friday. Lauretta has organised vegetarian sausages and gluten-free bread for those with dietary requirements. In the afternoon, the students will be participating in a range of enriching activities that have been organised by the teachers. We look forward to a fun and exciting day.
Assistant Principal
We are thrilled to welcome Mr Garreth Wigg as Acting Assistant Principal into our school community. He will visit school today and again on Friday to meet staff, students and parents. Mr Wigg will be teaching in 5/6 White on Wednesday and Friday each week as well as leading STEM in the school.
School Counsellor
Jaye, our school counsellor, has advised that she will be moving on as of the beginning of next term. Jaye has done an outstanding job in our school community, working with many of our students over the last two years. A replacement counsellor is being sought, and I will update you on the progress as soon as one has been sourced.
Leaving Students
If you are leaving our school at the end of this year can you please email the office to let us know your intentions. I know, at this time, many parents toss up the idea of changing schooling in favour of single-sex education. After some discussion with parents, we have decided to host a forum next Wednesday at 6 pm to discuss these plans, dispell some myths, speak about the benefits of co-educational learning and our plans for the future, particularly in the STEM space. We will also ask some parents who have reflected upon this decision recently to attend. Please register so I can timetable a suitable room in the school.https://forms.gle/Zh5Qr8MgSuQL7AYG8
Lock on the Front door
We have recently installed a magnetic lock on our front door to continue to provide the safest learning experiences for the children at our school. The lock will engage during the school day, and people wishing to gain access will need to be buzzed into the school from the office. We will have a buzzer installed in the coming days to alert Trish that people wish to gain entry.
OSHClub gates
We have locked the gates that are at the side of the school for a few reasons, including recent incidents of unauthorised cars gaining entry to our grounds and to ensure students safety during the school day. Please park and proceed through the front door or side gate to get to OSHClub if gates are not open.
Blessings and best wishes
Sean Rutledge
Principal (Acting)

Sunday Gospel: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C
Today’s Gospel, Luke 9:51-62, begins at a turning point in the Gospel of Luke: the moment when Jesus sets out on the long journey to Jerusalem that makes up the second half of his public ministry.
Through this Gospel, Jesus is telling us how hard it is to be a follower. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices and give up part of our life. Sometimes we will feel as if we have no place to rest our head because our schedule is so intense or because we are not among friends.
This Gospel can be seen as falling into a category of gospel passages that are often referred to as the ‘hard sayings’ of Jesus. These hard sayings are confronting to the audience. Yet, these challenging teachings remind us of the hard edge that is contained within Christian beliefs and teachings. They call for strength in the face of overwhelming odds.
Saints Peter and Paul Feast Day
We will be celebrating the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul this Friday 28th June. We will be having Mass at 12pm, followed by an afternoon of activities for the children to enjoy. All parents and members of the community are warmly invited to join us for Mass.
Dates for your Diary:
Friday 28th June – 12pm Mass to celebrate the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul
Friday 28th June – Last day to register year six students for the Sacrament of Confirmation
Blessings for the week ahead,
Stephanie Burns

Miss Butler’s Literacy Update
Last Monday, classes met with Australian author Samantha Tidy (mother to Grace in Year 1 and Reuben in Kindergarten). Samantha shared interesting facts about the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and read her book, ‘The Day We Built the Bridge’. Students were treated to a preview of her newest illustrated children’s picture book, ‘Our Bush Capital’, which pays tribute to the many wonderful things that make childhood in Canberra so special. Samantha has kindly offered a school community discount for the pre-order of this book due out in February 2020. To view this deal and her other publications, please visit https://www.samanthatidy.com/. We thank Samantha for generously offering her time and look forward to future visits.
We have had a successful start to our Reading Club on Tuesdays at lunch time. Students across all grades have been escaping the Winter chill to meet in the library and enjoy the reading and sharing of various books. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for photos and book recommendations.
You may have heard that Miss Butler spends Friday mornings visiting classes during the Literacy Block. She meets with individuals and small groups to discuss all things Reading, Writing and Word Study. Recently in Year 2, students have been writing creative narratives based on treasure maps they made for Maths. During her discussions, Miss Butler explained articles (a/an/the), the jobs of ‘silent final e’ and the rule that there is at least one vowel in every syllable. Meanwhile, in 3/4Y students have been exploring various spelling strategies, including different vowel combinations, adding s/es to words, base word + suffixes, parts of speech (including how some words can be nouns or verbs, depending on their use) and compound words. 3/4W were busily editing and making final preparations for their part of the Stage 2 Growth Assembly last week. Miss Butler hopes to meet with students in the Stage 3 classrooms this week.
Please watch this space for information about an exciting whole school celebration for all things Literacy next term!
