Dear Parents and Carers
Science Week
This week we have celebrated Science Week, culminating in a day on Wednesday which was given over to Year 6 students running science experiments in classrooms. After recess, the children delighted in a series of experiments in the hall, including testing how many balloons it takes to support a person’s weight. It was an excellent day, and my thanks go to Paul Jenkins for his work in coordinating the day, and our excellent Year 6 students for leading the experiments and supporting the teachers.
First Eucharist
This weekend, students in Year 4 will make their First Eucharist at Holy Trinity Church, Curtin. My thanks to the parents of the students, for their great support at home with the Home Groups; to Fr John Woods and the parish team; to our Years 3/4 teachers, Paul Jenkins, Sarah Walsh and Josh Gereis; and to Stephanie Burns, our Religious Education Coordinator. All students in Year 4 have a retreat day today. My congratulations to our students for their step in faith.
National Catholic Education Conference
Last week, I attended the NCEC Conference in Melbourne, from Monday – Wednesday, before taking two days of leave. The conference was very good. Approximately 40 personnel from Catholic Education attended (principals and office staff), including our own Fr John Woods, who is also the Vicar for Education. Some of the highlights included Fr Anthony Gittens, who spoke on inculturation and the Gospel, and who reminded us that Catholic schools are sacraments for their communities. Barbara Coupar, the Director of Catholic Schools in Scotland, was also excellent. Dr Coupar spoke of Scottish attempts to reimagine the purpose and direction of Catholic schools in Scotland, noting that there was a need to revisit Catholic identity and assist principals and leaders in sustaining an authentic Catholic identity and spirituality. On the last day, we were fortunate in hearing Fr Frank Brennan speak about the proposed Aboriginal Voice to Parliament, and what the contours for such a discussion might look like within Catholic education. It was a very worthwhile conference. My thanks to Anna Williams for leading the school so capably while I was a way, and to all staff for their great support.
Public Holiday – Thursday September 22nd
A reminder that the Prime Minister has designated next Thursday a National Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away last week. Thursday September 22nd is subsequently a national public holiday. Sts Peter and Paul will not be open next Thursday.
Have a wonderful week with your families.
Best wishes
Cameron Johns
Principal

Retreat Session for First Eucharist
Today the Year 4 students at Sts Peter and Paul participated in a First Eucharist Retreat. The session was a lovely time for the students to consolidate all they have been learning about the Sacrament of Eucharist. Thank you to Miss Walsh and the Year 6 Youth Ministry team, as well as Maddie our Youth Minister, who helped so much with the day.
Enquiries regarding First Eucharist can be directed to the Parish Office (6281 3999 / wodennorth@cg.org.au ).
First Eucharist Celebrations this Weekend
This weekend, we will gather as a Parish Community to Celebrate the many children in the Transfiguration Parish that are receiving their First Eucharist. All are warmly invited to join us at any of the Masses this weekend at Curtin.
A big congratulations to the children and their families on this important step on their faith journey, we are very proud of you!
Catholic Voice
The school has a number of hard copies of the most recent Catholic Voice. If you would like a copy sent home with your child, please email me and I will send it home next week. The publication is also available online.
Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Gospel Reflection
We return again to the Lukan theme of money and how it can get in the way of being a true disciple. This week’s gospel passage reminds us that we cannot be a follower of God and chase after riches at the same time. That parable of the steward and his master is one that is rarely quoted and would be unfamiliar to most readers. The actions of the steward upon learning that he is to be dismissed seem to us to be evidence of his dubious dealings and yet the master praises his astuteness.
When a steward entered into loans and deals on behalf of his master, he would build into the repayment a profit for himself. This was quite normal and acceptable. So the amount that the steward asks the debtors to reduce their debts to the master is actually the cut that he had built into the deal for himself. His actions are, surprisingly, quite noble and legitimate. What he is doing is ensuring that his master receives all that is owed to him whilst the steward is making himself more popular with the debtors because they don’t have to pay back as much. It would be like a modern day salesman saying that he would forego his commission on the sale so that the purchaser didn’t have to pay as much.
But why does Jesus use this parable? He makes the point that when the crunch comes – when the kingdom of God is imminent – monetary wealth is going to be meaningless. It is best to cut your losses and turn your energy to building relationships rather than riches.

Have a blessed week,
