Dear Parents and Carers
Fathers’ Day Breakfast
Sunday week sees the celebration of Fathers’ Day take place, and to celebrate Fathers’ Day at Sts Peter and Paul, we are holding a breakfast on the morning on Friday, August 30th, at 7.45am. All fathers are invited to the breakfast. Coffee and pastries will be served, and children’s artwork will be displayed. My thanks to Katherine Jones and members of the Community Council for organising this event.
Sts P & P Trivia Night
On Friday September 13th, at 6pm, our excellent Community Council has organised a Trivia Night for the parent body of Sts Peter and Paul. Parents are invited to make up tables of 10, with BYO nibbles and drinks. This is a parent only function and promises to be a great deal of fun. The school also has a teachers’ table to join the competition. I look forward to seeing you there on the night.
First Eucharist Presentation Mass
A reminder that there are Presentation Masses, this weekend, for students in Year 4 who are making their first Eucharist this year. Students are invited to attend either the 6pm Mass on Saturday night or the 9.30am Mass on Sunday. These Masses remind us that we part of something bigger than ourselves, and they also serve to ask for the blessings from the whole community, as our students undertake this step in faith in their sacramental journey. My thanks to Fr John and the parish for their great support, and to Sarah Walsh (our acting REC) and the Year 4 teachers for their equally steadfast and faithful support.
South Weston Regional Athletics
In other news, this Thursday sees a large contingent of students from Sts Peter and Paul attend the South Weston Regional Athletics Carnival, at the Woden Athletics Track and Field Park. Forty-two students are attending. My thanks to Luke Gubler for coordinating our involvement, and again, my thanks to Luke and to Noah Ryan for attending the carnival.
Squash Program
In further sports news, our Year 5 students began their Squash Program last week, and it continues this week, and the weeks to come. By all accounts, the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a great experience. Again, my thanks to Luke Gubler for coordinating the program.
Book Week
Next week, we celebrate Book Week. A reminder that students are invited to wear a book character costume on Thursday, August 29th. A book week costume parade will take place at 9.15am, after morning assembly. All parents are invited to attend.
Siloam
This week, the Siloam program takes place for all principals in Catholic schools, across the archdiocese. I am away Thursday night and Friday at St Clément’s, Galong. Siloam takes place 3 times a year and is a program for principals that is designed to be a mini retreat. It is organised and run by Catholic Education. It is an invaluable experince and is highly valued across the archdiocese.
Have a wonderful week with your families.
Best wishes

Gospel - John 6:60-69
21st Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)
Many disciples desert JesusRELIGIOUS
For the last few weeks we have heard a number of readings from chapter 6 of the Gospel of John focusing on the teaching of Jesus that he is the Bread of Life, come down from heaven. This reading is the last in the sequence and shows the reaction to Jesus’ teaching. What Jesus has been saying in this discourse is incredibly confronting to his Jewish audience. Jesus asserts that he has come down from heaven – from the Father – and that through knowing him one can know the Father. Jews were the first people to have a concept of one God. This belief did not allow for any spouse or child of God, nor any personal manifestation. They struggled with what Jesus was saying because his claim to have come down from heaven could be seen as blasphemous. No wonder many of them walked away from Jesus and wanted nothing more to do with him!
Jesus gives an interesting response to them. He tells them that it is the spirit that is important, not his human flesh, and that the spirit is what he has been sharing with them through his words and actions. He is trying to say to these faithful Jews, don’t be hung up about the fact that I’m here in person, listen to my message as you’ve never heard it before. It is an interesting thought for our modern audience as well. How often do we fail to hear the message of Jesus because we are dismissive of the way in which it comes to us; the messenger; or the circumstances in which we hear it? The message is all the more confronting when it comes from an unlikely (or even un-likable) source. The message of Jesus is to be found in our everyday encounters with everyday people.

Get ready for Book Week Celebrations next Thursday, August 29th! Hooray!
The day promises to be filled with magic and excitement.
We'll kick off the day with the Book Week Parade, where the children can show off their costumes. Afterward, they'll enjoy some shared reading time. Following lunch and recess, the children will dive into two different craft activities.
It's going to be a fantastic day! Remember, costumes can be inspired by a book or tied to the theme of Magic.
We're excited for this magical day to arrive!
Until then... Keep reading!

A WORD FROM OUR SCHOOL LEADERS
Last week we did a lot of fun activities to celebrate National Science Week. In all of the classrooms there were different science activities. My favourite was the skittle experiment, where we poured water into the middle of a plate and then the skittles formed a beautiful rainbow. The Year 6 leaders had the privilege to explain the science behind the experiment. Let me tell you about the skittle experiment. The coloured sugar that is coating the skittles DISSOLVES into the water and spreads out due to a process called DIFFUSION.
It was really fun and everyone who conducted this experiment enjoyed it (especially because you could eat them afterwards).?

Science day was really fun!
As Year Six leaders we got to lead and help out the younger students.
My favourite experiment was the blooming of the paper flowers with Mrs Birch. First we coloured in a paper flower with whatever colours we wanted. Then we folded them up and put them in water and voila, they bloomed before our eyes and the colours melted into the water, making pretty patterns. The science behind it is pretty simple. Paper is made up of fibres, when you fold them, they bend. When water is added the fibres straighten, making the flowers bloom.?

My favourite experiment was the turmeric experiment. It was a unique experience but very creative and fun. The night before, Mrs Marsham painted plain pieces of paper with turmeric and water paste. The next day when the paper was dry, we all had a dish of dishwashing soap and another one with lemon juice. We were given a cuetip to dip one end in the dishwashing soap and then draw a picture on the turmeric paper, the turmeric that we drew on would turn red and would show us our drawing. We dipped the other end of the cuetip in the lemon juice and it erased our dish soap drawing, returning it to yellow like magic. Here is the science behind it: turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin, which remains yellow in an acidic or neutral solution, but turns red in a base. When you add turmeric into a basic solution (soap water, baking soda), it changes to a deep red colour. It was so cool.⭐️

At the end of the day we got to do a special science quiz arranged by Mr Johns (he put on really old music) and the best part was the ‘6ologists’ won the upper primary quiz award. 1 White won the lower primary quiz award. It was really fun seeing everyone enjoying themselves. Congratulations on everyone joining in (Mr Johns don’t forgot our super doopers).

Welcome back!
This week in the kitchen the children are learning about fruit. They designed their own fruit kebab in their workbooks. They did a great job.
In the garden we planted our bean seedlings. The children were brilliant, they cleared, planted and mulched so our seedlings can grow beautifully.
Garden Club is on every Friday at lunch time. Everybody is welcome.

SPINACH FILO TRIANGLES
Ingredients
Bunch spinach, washed & chopped
1 apple, grated
500g ricotta cheese
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 lemon, zested
Pinch salt & pepper
8 sheets filo pastry
1/4 cup olive oil
Method
Preheat oven to 180 degrees, line oven trays with baking paper and set aside.
Bring a saucepan of water to the boil, add spinach and cook for 30 seconds. Drain and run under cold water, drain again.
Squeeze all moisture from both the spinach and the grated apple using paper towel and place in a bowl with the ricotta, egg and lemon rind. Mix well and season with salt and pepper.
Place 1 sheet of filo pastry on a clean chopping board and cover remaining filo with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out.
Cut sheet in three strips and brush with oil. Place a tablespoon of mixture in the corner and fold diagonally (making a triangle), place on prepared tray.
Continue with remaining filo strips, then repeat with other sheets.
Brush triangles with oil and bake for 20 minutes, until golden.
