Dear Parents and Carers
“There is the small-time stuff, of course – how many of us have had a perfect run through this morning, or, failing that, through the last week? But there is also the heavy-duty stuff, which can range all the way from things that steadily drain our energies to things that break our hearts. The first time I ever set foot in this University…a distinguished Australian poet and public intellectual told me that he thought I needn’t worry about going to find distress, because distress would probably come and find me.”
Peter Steele SJ, “She’ll Be Right”
The late Jesuit priest Peter Steele had a gift with words. It is no surprise that he was both a published poet and a lecturer in English at Melbourne University. In the paragraph quoted above, Peter Steele is writing about the fact that, given time, distress becomes a part of life, and almost always comes visited upon us, without us looking for it. He suggests that it might be helpful to remember that “…no one less or other than the Son of God lodges deep at the heart of our own personal distresses, whatever they may be.” What each of us does about that, and our own distress, is up to us – but Steele reminds us that “…all that is deathly in our experience can be made lively by his Father.” Easter itself reminds us of that fact. In these trying times, when for many of us, our resources can be strained, it can be a source of hope to remember that there is a larger canvas upon which our lives are lived. Gentleness with our own self, and with each other, is often a way into remembering we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
South Weston Region Athletics Carnival
Next Tuesday is the South Weston Region Athletics Carnival. We have a number of students attending and representing the school in a number of events. The event is being held at Athletics Park; the same venue that sees us hold our annual school carnival. I will accompany our students, as will Cathy Shepherd. I wish all of our students the very best for the competition.
Catalyst
On Tuesday, we continue our work with Toni Hatten-Roberts, who is visiting our school and working with a number of our staff, in the delivery of a particular teaching method, or pedagogy, known as ‘Daily Review’. ‘Daily Review’ is both content focused and teacher directed – which is to say, it embodies a particular method of explicit teaching – and it seeks to build on a student’s long-term memory. Daily Review is supported by some research into the science of learning, which suggests that learning and the retention of knowledge in our long-term memory, go hand-in hand. With knowledge able to be retrieved relatively easily from our long-term memory, greater cognitive effort can go into learning newer concepts or ideas. The particular subject area we are focusing upon is Maths. My thanks to all the teachers involved, and to our Assistant Principal Anna Williams, who is coordinating our Catalyst involvement.
Book Week
A reminder that one of the most exciting annual calendar fixtures is fast approaching: Book Week, which takes place in Week 6. The theme Book Week 2022 is ‘Dreaming with eyes wide open”. We have a number of activities planned, including on the Thursday (August 25th) our Costume Parade. It will be an exciting week. My thanks to our excellent librarian, Amanda Basedow, for coordinating the week.

This year at Sts Peter and Paul, we are all called to ‘Let Your Light Shine”
Assumption
In reading the scriptures, we note that Mary perseveres in faith throughout her life. She gathers with the apostles for prayer even after her son’s ascension (see Acts 1:14). Thus, the New Testament presents a clear portrait of Mary as the first and preeminent disciple of Christ, who hears the word of God and keeps it in her heart.
Since one of the blessings promised to all faithful disciples is victory over death, it is fitting that Mary, who is the first and model disciple of Christ, would be the first to receive this blessing. Catholics thus believe that the privilege of resurrection promised to all faithful Christians was given first to Mary and in a totally unique way.
While the rest of us hope to have our bodies raised to glory at the end of time, Mary experienced the resurrection and glorification of her body at the moment her earthly life ended. Thus, her assumption—which flows from her unique participation in Christ’s victory as the mother of the Saviour and as the first and most faithful of Christ’s followers—anticipates to some degree our own share in the fullness of that victory if we persevere as followers of Christ. (Edward Sri, Franciscan Spirit Media)
On Monday next week, we will gather in the Hall to celebrate Mass in honour of the Assumption of Our Lady. Many thanks to Year 5 and 1W who will be contributing to the Mass and enhancing our Liturgy with a beautiful Song, ‘Mary our Mother’.

What does the program involve?

There will be a limited number of seats available for candidates, their families and guests, mindful of the need to accommodate other parishioners at each of these Masses.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C
Gospel Reflection
This week’s gospel passage carries with it the expectation of the late 1st Century as the early Christians awaited the triumphant return of the Christ (sometimes called the Second Coming or the Parousia). This is a familiar theme through the gospels and, in fact, across the gospels we can see that the communities were beginning to face the realisation that the promised return was taking longer than they had expected. In the gospel of Mark, it is clear that the community expects the Parousia at any moment, while by the time of the writing of the gospel of Luke, 10 or 15 years later, we can see that the language has taken on an aspect of uncertainty about the timing – it could be sooner or it could be later (‘It may be in the second watch he comes, or in the third…’).
What began to emerge was an attitude that if we don’t know when the Parousia will come, then we need to live ‘in anticipation’ of it. We need to live as if the Parousia were imminent. So, rather than waiting for the kingdom of God to be delivered, we must live our lives in such a way as to bring about the kingdom; to draw the kingdom into the present. Jesus often spoke of the kingdom as both near and not yet. If we all live the values of the kingdom, by our very actions we bring the kingdom into being. This gives an incredible significance to the way we choose to live our lives. If we ‘invest’ in the kingdom by living out the values of the kingdom and living in expectation of the Parousia, then that ‘investment’ is its own reward.
(Reflection by Greg Sunter)
Have a blessed week,

Noah B (6M) is raising money for cancer research through Variety and has made the decision to make a difference by cutting and donating his hair to be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to cancer. He was inspired to raise money after recently losing someone in his family to cancer. The haircut is booked for Thursday, 8 September!!

2 Weeks to go until Book Week gets underway!
Just another reminder due to COVID restrictions we will have to alter some Book Week plans but we will still have our Character Parade on Thursday 25th August (please note the day as it is different to what was on some term overviews). Students are asked to dress up as their favourite book character and to bring their favourite book (or a copy of the front cover). We will have our parade first thing in the morning, but unfortunately due to restrictions, we are unable to have parents. I am hoping we can stream it online- similar to last year. It is one of the most exciting weeks of the year and I know the students are very excited!
Classes will then be completing a range of activities based on the CBCA Shortlisted 2022 books.
In Week 7 we are excited to welcome Meerkat Productions, who will be performing 2 shows based on 2 of the shortlisted books. These will be in the Hall.
Mrs Raccosta is also offering some Book Week themed treats during Week 6 so keep an eye out for some yummy book based delights!

This week in the kitchen Years 3 and 4 cooked beautifully.
They are learning about the Fruit Group and why it is so important in our diets. In cooking they learnt how to include fruit in two different ways.
They made banana icecream and apple crumble. There were big smiles on their faces.
Years 3 and 4 also had another lesson on sustainability and learnt more about food wastage and how we can prevent it.
The garden has been receiving lots of rain and our garden club crew will be helping us plant in the next few weeks.
For more information email Mrs Katie Birch at Katherine.birch@cg.catholic.edu.au.
