Dear families,
Cameron has enjoyed the National Catholic Education Commission’s Conference in Melbourne this week. We look forward to his return to school on Monday. I write to you in his absence.
Today we pay tribute to Her Majesty the Queen and acknowledge her remarkable reign. I’m sure her legacy of service will inspire many, for generations to come. May she rest in peace.
The teachers have used today’s Pupil Free Day to conduct collaborative planning. It has been a pleasure to check in on our industrious teaching teams and hear their robust discussions and creative ambitions for the Term 4 teaching programs. We are grateful for the extra opportunity to work together to build rich, real and relevant learning opportunities for our students.
Yesterday, our wonderful Kindergarten students showcased their growth and learning at their assembly. We couldn’t be prouder of these ‘Year-One ready’ learners and their dedicated teachers.
Have a wonderful Spring weekend,
Kind regards,
Anna Williams
Assistant Principal
This year at Sts Peter and Paul, we are all called to ‘Let Your Light Shine”
Retreat For First Eucharist
The Year 4 students at Sts Peter and Paul will participate in a First Eucharist Retreat next Friday held in our school hall. The retreat will run for the first 2 sessions of the day, and will be a lovely time for the students to consolidate all they have been learning about the Sacrament of Eucharist. For the students who will be receiving their First Eucharist next weekend, we will have a practice session to ensure everyone knows what to expect at Mass.
Enquiries regarding First Eucharist can be directed to the Parish Office (6281 3999 / wodennorth@cg.org.au ).
Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Gospel Reflection
The Gospel passage begins with an accusation that Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. This is the gravest social accusation one could level at another because who you ate with was a reflection of your own status. To welcome sinners and to eat with them was to effectively become one of them yourself. In response to this accusation, rather than mounting an argument, the Gospel writer has Jesus tell three parables about the lost being found. The answer to the accusation is that those dismissed as ‘sinners’ are the ‘lost’ who will be celebrated with extravagant rejoicing when they have been ‘found’ again through their acceptance of the message of Jesus.
The parable of the lost son is usually taken in isolation and rarely is heard in the full context of the three parables of the lost being found. We need all three to recognise the ridiculous nature of the celebration of the forgiving father’s actions. All three parables display great folly. What shepherd would leave 99 of his sheep in the wilderness to go in search of just one? Similarly what woman is going to reveal to her friends how poverty-stricken she really is by inviting them to rejoice with her at the finding of one lost drachma – the least valuable of coins. When we come to the father rejoicing at his son’s return, this too would have seemed a ridiculous folly. Because of his actions, the son completely shamed himself and his father. The father’s expected and justified response would have been to turn his back on his son and banish him forever. To welcome him back would have been unthinkable to Jesus’ audience. In an echo of God’s ridiculous and unbounded loving forgiveness, the father welcomes his son with open arms and reclaims him as his own.

Have a blessed week,

The Big Chop has happened!!
Noah B (6M) decided to raise money for cancer research through Variety. He has made a difference by cutting and donating his hair to be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to cancer. He was inspired to raise money after recently losing someone in his family to cancer.
The haircut took place yesterday afternoon at On Point Hair. Noah was a little nervous but looks soooooo good. More importantly, he raised just over $1700!
We will miss his flowing curly locks but are so proud of him!
Two of our Year 6 students, Cameron de J and Samson T, who play for the Queanbeyan Whites Junior Rugby Club, successfully won their grand final on the weekend against Gungahlin Eagles 31-19.
SCIENCE DAY – Wednesday 14th September, 2022
Sts Peter & Paul will be celebrating our ‘Annual Science Day’ on Wednesday 14th September, 2022.
In class groups, students will participate in a variety of engaging science activities.
Keeping with tradition, our Year 6 students will lead the experiments with teacher support and supervision.
The theme for this year is “Glass: More than meets the eye.” Students are invited to dress as scientists/inventors for the day.
Activities include:
Storm in a Saucer
Erupting Lemon Volcano
Plastic Bag Parachutes
Air Cannons
Invisible Ink
IMPORTANT: In preparation for Science Day, we need your help to send in recycled materials for the activities we will be conducting. If you have any of these materials that you were going to throw out anyway, could you please send them to school with your child.
Here is a list of materials that we will need to make our annual Science Day a success: plastic shopping bags; clean small soft drink bottles without labels (coke, fanta, lemonade, etc); and cardboard cylinders/rolls.
Students are also invited to enter our Balloon Car Competition. The Balloon Car Competition is a new addition to our Science Day Activities. There will be prizes for each Stage within the school. Please refer to the Balloon Car Information Sheets for details.
For ideas and activities to try at home, please see Questacon’s activity page

We look forward to an exciting day of science! Keep an eye on our Facebook page and newsletter for photos and student reflections.

Last week in the Kitchen Garden was fun filled!! "Isn’t it always?" I hear you ask…
The children learnt how to make yummy pizza scrolls for Father’s Day. They also learnt that the scrolls included some of the food groups. They then decorated and wrote a special message on a plate on which to put the scrolls and present it to the special males in their lives. We hope all Father’s and father figures all had a lovely and special day.
The children also made apple muffins as part of their sustainability lesson in the kitchen called The Journey of the Apple. They learnt about where the apple comes from and how it gets to their plate and that the whole apple can be used and doesn’t need to be thrown away just because it’s not perfect.
Garden Club was a hive of activity last week. We needed to plant some trees and called out to our enthusiastic garden crew for help. Our prayer was answered. Many children joined us at lunch time on Friday to plant two lime trees. They had to dig two holes, add compost and manure and then cover with mulch and water. It was a big job - but many hands made light work. Our crew also managed to squeeze in watering the other garden beds as well. Well done!!
For more information about the Kitchen Garden program email Mrs Katie Birch katherine.birch@cg.catholic.edu.au.
Happy cooking and gardening…
