“This sovereignty is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or ‘mother nature’, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with our ancestors.”
Uluru Statement from Heart
Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome back for another school term. I hope and trust that you and your families had an enjoyable and restful two weeks, and found the change of pace and routine to be restorative. Staff and students have returned well and with energy and we are looking forward to another excellent 10 weeks of learning.
This week, we celebrate NAIDOC week. We celebrate with a liturgical reflection on Thursday, some associated class activities throughout the week. On Friday, Fron Garrett-Rumba and I are attending the archdiocesan NAIDOC Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral. With us will be some of our older Indigenous students. This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Heal Country. I began my teaching career in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, in an Aboriginal community called Kururrungku (Walmajarri for Wallaby, the dreaming of the region). It was an indescribably privileged period of my life and I learnt much more than I taught. This week, I remember with particular gratitude the students I taught (four of whom have since passed on), their families and the community that befriended me. There are no words that can adequately convey the gratitude I feel, or the impact my time in the community had on me.

Rostrum
Next Tuesday, Josie Murrell from 6W is representing Sts Peter and Paul in the South Canberra Rostrum Public Speaking finals. Josie’s speech is called 'A better way'. I wish Josie all the very best and I look forward to attending and hearing her speech on the night.
Cyber Safety Talk
Next week, CE personnel will be visiting the school to give a cyber-safety talk to our Years 5 and 6 students. Such talks are important for the wellbeing of our students and their ongoing awareness of safety issues as they pertain to all matters IT.
Year 6 Leadership Day
Our Year 6 students continue their leadership days with Term 3’s day being Thursday week. The days are invaluable for the students as they continue to develop their resilience, grit and teamwork skills. The students also have a great deal of fun, as they attend the day camp. My thanks to Paul Jenkins and Sarah Kennelly for organising the Leadership Days.

STEM Program – Kindergarten – Year 2
Last Semester, our students in Years 3 – 6 participated in weekly STEM lessons with our Assistant Principal, Sean Rutledge. The program was a great success and culminated in a project display day at the end of Term 2. This Semester, Kindergarten – Year 2 will have weekly lessons with Mr Rutledge, where they will hone their inquiry skills and explore various problems using their knowledge and skills in science and technology. In so doing, they will also develop their capacity to think creatively, when solving real-world problems. It promises to be wonderful opportunity for our students. My thanks to Sean, and all of the K – 2 teachers, for their support our students.
Have a wonderful week.
Best wishes

Gospel Reflection
Fifty years ago the word ‘stress’ was only ever applied to materials like steel and the wings of planes. But since then, along with ‘pressure’, it has first crept into our language and more lately become an everyday term. Everyone experiences stress now. Perhaps it’s the ever-growing pace of life or an innate competitiveness but pressure and stress have become part of daily life for most people in the so-called civilised world. Although he may never have used the words ‘stress’ or ‘pressure’, Jesus knew all about the demands of ministry with other people. When the disciples returned from their first efforts away from Jesus He knew that they needed some time out to debrief, to pray and to re-energise themselves. He ordered them all into a boat and they headed for a lonely place where they could be by themselves and rejuvenate. Jesus recognised the importance of taking time out. If you are engaged in a vocation or ministry that sees you meeting the needs of others, you need some time out to reflect on your experiences; time to hold those people up to God in prayer; time to make sense of your work and the interactions you’ve shared; time to simply recharge your batteries so that you can once again give fully of yourself.

NAIDOC WeeK
In recognition of NAIDOC week this week at school we include the Aboriginal Lord’s Prayer.
You are our Father, You live in heaven,
We talk to You. Father You are good.
You are our Father, You live in heaven,
We talk to You. Father You are good.
We believe your Word, Father,
We are Your children, give us bread today.
We believe Your Word, Father,
We are Your children, give us bread today.
We have done wrong, we are sorry,
Teach us, Father, all about Your Word.
We have done wrong, we are sorry,
Teach us, Father, all about Your Word.
Others have done wrong to us,
And we are sorry for them, Father, today.
Others have done wrong to us,
And we are sorry for them, Father, today.
Stop us from doing wrong, Father,
Save us all from the evil one.
Stop us from doing wrong, Father,
Save us all from the Evil One.

In Term Three, the students of Stage Three (Years 5 & 6) will be performing our biannual school production. This year our school play is called “Star Warts”. Auditions have been held and the students with speaking roles now know which parts they have.
To aid in keeping costs down, we are seeking your assistance to source props for the play. If you are able to donate any of the following, it would be very much appreciated: Fluffy Dice, Fairy Wings x2, Large Torches x2, Giant Tennis Ball, Small Tennis Balls, Rackets x7, Hand Mirror, Wig (with buns on the side), and Toy Light Sabres.
If you require your props to be returned at the end of the school production, please label them. If you do not wish for your props to be returned, they will be stored for future productions. Please send in your props as soon as possible, so that we can work out what we will need to purchase or construct.
If you would like to offer your assistance in creating props and costumes for the play, please let us know. Your assistance is also very much appreciated. Thank you.

This term we welcome Year 3 and 4 into the kitchen to learn about health and other areas of the curriculum. They will also be learning about sustainability.
Year 3 and 4 are going to find out more about why foods are good for us and why some aren’t. They are also going to explore where some food comes from such as carrots and bread. It will be an exciting term.
Garden club starts next week. Over the holidays our garden has been busy with lots of things growing. It looks amazing. We even have a new pergola to keep the sun off when we enjoy eating in the garden.
This term we will prepare for Father’s Day and continue to care for and harvest our produce.
If you have any questions or want to know more about the kitchen, the garden and the curriculum please email Mrs Birch at Katherine.birch@cg.catholic.edu.au.
Thanks
The Garden Club

SOMETHING FUN TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS
There is still plenty of time to have some winter fun in the snow and there are a few options that are not too far from Canberra. Pop up to Corin Forrest for a day trip or venture a little further for a weekend in the Snowy Mountains, Thredbo or Lake Crackenback, for example. There is something for everyone, with different skill sets catered for.
School Sport ACT (SSACT)
Please follow this link www.schoolsportact.org.au to access all information related to School Sport ACT. The current primary school sporting calendar can be found on this page. Please ensure that you visit this page regularly as dates sometimes change due to unforeseen circumstances.
SSACT Trials
The process for registering your child for an ACT sport trial can be found below. If you need any assistance registering your child, don’t hesitate to get in touch and we will hopefully be able to help you out. If you find that there are any steps missing within this process, please let me know at your earliest convenience.
SSACT Registration Process
School Sport ACT now collects all registration information online – this is to prevent the movement to and fro of a paper note and have all information readily available to officials prior to the trial. As this process incurs a fee for data storage, system maintenance and admin, a small fee payment via credit card will be required.
How to register a Student with School Sport ACT.
- Go to the School Sport ACT website schoolsportact.org.au
- Go to Register (top right corner of the homepage) and create an account.
- After completion, check your registered email to verify your account. (Always check your spam folder in case you didn't immediately receive the verification email).
- After verifying your account, Log In (top right hand corner of the homepage) using your registered email and password.
- You’ll be presented with your Parent Dashboard. From there you can start the process of registering a Student into a Trial.
- Click the green Add Student
- Complete all of the information required for your Student (e.g. Medical Details, Sport, Playing History, Preferred Position, School etc.) and save the information. (If your child is already in the system, please ensure that your child’s school is up to date in your profile.)
- Click on the trial information box and then click on the register to trial link.
- Make the small credit card payment. After payment your Principal/School Approver will receive an email for their approval to trial.
You will be able to see the process has been complete back in My Profile – once your Principal/School Approver has completed the approval process your child’s information will be collated onto a list for the Team Manager and Coach prior to trial.
