Dear Parents and Carers
Catalyst: The Writing Revolution
Catalyst is a program that is a Catholic system-wide initiative, designed to introduce some professional development to all Catholic teachers and leaders, in the area of the science of learning and direct instruction. We began our own school journey last year with the introduction of InitialLit, a K – 2 phonics program. This year, balancing the ledger a little in the upper grades, teachers from Grades 3 – 6 are participating in a program called ‘The Writing Revolution’. It is closely aligned with the thinking found in the science of learning and favours an explicit and direct instructional approach to the teaching of writing. Teachers from Grades 3 – 6 begin their journey today.
First Eucharist
Last year, our then Grade 4 students prepared for their First Eucharist. Due to COVID restrictions at the time, students were unable to make their First Eucharist. As a result, the reception of the Sacrament has continued into this term. On Sunday February 27, students who have made their First Eucharist will have a celebration Mass at our parish Church, the Church of the Transfiguration. Our students will join with the students from Holy Trinity, Curtin, in what will be a very special occasion.
Chief Minister's Reading Challenge
Our annual involvement in the Chief Minister's Reading Challenge begins in two weeks, with all boys and girls invited to take up the challenge of reaching the reading target set this year. It is a great initiative and our students and school always does very well. My thanks to our wonderful school librarian, Amanda Basedow, for supporting this.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Term 1 of each year sees the school hold parent/teacher interviews. This year, we are holding them in Week 6. It serves as a great opportunity for parents and teachers to check in with each other to see how the students are progressing and if there are any concerns that need addressing. Bookings can be made online and information will be going home next week (Week 4) that explains the booking process.
Have a wonderful week with your families.
Best wishes
Cameron Johns
Principal
This year at Sts Peter and Paul, we are all called to ‘Let Your Light Shine”
Reconciliation 2022
The preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation is underway. A very big thank you to the parents who have very generously offered to host a home group. There are still a number of groups that are without a nominated host. Groups can only proceed if they have a host, so if you are in a group without a host, please consider offering to host the group (this does not have to be in your home, it can even be online!)
First Eucharist (from 2021)
Many children from our Parish are continuing to celebrate their First Eucharist during 9:30 Parish Masses each weekend at Holy Trinity. We would like to congratulate all these children and their families on this important step in their faith journeys.
On the 27th February there will also be an additional Mass at 11.30am at Holy Trinity to celebrate the First Eucharist of a number of these children. It is wonderful that we are finally able to celebrate this wonderful occasion with these students and their families.
Blessing of Year 6 Leaders and Opening School Mass 2022
On Friday of last week, we were lucky enough to gather with Year 6 students and teachers to celebrate Mass together and welcome in the 2022 school year. The Year 6 students and their new leadership badges were blessed by Fr John, our Parish Priest. It was such a beautiful Mass, and the Year 6 students are to be commended on their prayerful and reverent participation in the liturgy. A special thanks to Miss Kennelly and Mr Gubler to their assistance in preparing the children.
Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Luke 6:27-38
The radical teaching that was begun in last week’s Gospel as the beatitudes and woes is continued in this week’s challenge to be forgiving, compassionate and generous in the same way that God expresses abundant love. As with the blessings and curses of the Beatitudes passage, this teaching continues the challenge to act against cultural and social expectations. Who would be surprised if you were to express hatred for an enemy or for someone who hates you or treats you badly? But Jesus tells his disciples to love their enemies and to do good to those who hate them. His instruction is contrary to the ‘normal’ way of doing things – and that’s exactly the message Jesus wanted to convey! Rather than a spiteful, vengeful God who keeps score and punishes wrongdoing, Jesus presents a compelling image of a God of unbounded compassion and abundant generosity.
In this passage we find one version of the Golden Rule that appears repeatedly throughout the gospels (as well as most other religious traditions): ‘Treat others as you would like them to treat you.’ It is followed up with a comment that it takes no effort to treat well people whom you like – anybody can do that. The challenge is to treat people you don’t like as you would like to be treated yourself. In a society that had very strict rules about the way to treat different people and clearly established boundaries between different groups, this was a tough ask by Jesus. Bear in mind also that there was an occupying army in the country and Jesus was encouraging the people to treat even their enemies, the Romans, with love, compassion and forgiveness. This was a radical and challenging teaching! (Reflection by Greg Sunter)
Blessings for the week ahead,

The Kitchen Garden Program
Welcome to another year with Sts Peter and Paul and our Kitchen Garden Program. This is a unique program that joins together our kitchen and garden with what children learn in the curriculum. We are super excited to be back this term and we have many projects happening in our kitchen, garden and classrooms.
Years 1 and 2 are spending some time in the kitchen learning about Food Science and the Five Food Groups. We are focusing on one group per week as well as learning great skills such as kitchen safety, chopping and the importance of washing up.
This week in the kitchen our Year 1 and 2’s picked some cherry tomatoes from our garden. They found this very exciting and learnt that the red ones were the best and why (because they have loads of nutrients) and the green ones needed a little bit more time with the “mother tree”. Much laughter and smiles were had when the children found that if they pressed too hard while holding or cutting the tomatoes, the seeds would burst out – EVERYWHERE!! The children made wraps and vegetable dips with crudités and pita crisps. Check out the Maths patterns below. Also, let me know if you would like any of the recipes.
In the classroom the children are learning more about the food groups during their health units – Making Healthy Food Choices in Year 1 and Health Messages in Year 2. What they are learning ties in beautifully with what they have seen, picked, chopped and eaten in the kitchen and garden.
Our Year 6 students are helping with our composting and collecting it from outside the classrooms each week. Thanks Year 6. Our worms are super happy!
If you would like any information in relation the Kitchen Garden Program at our school please email Mrs Katie Birch Katherine.birch@cg.catholic.edu.au.
