Dear Parents and Carers
Royal Visit
On Monday, Sts Peter and Paul were fortunate enough to visit Fairburn base, with a host of other schools, and welcome the King and Queen to Australia. While we were not close enough to greet them in anyway, it was a remarkable experience and one that was good to have.
Swimming Lessons
Swimming Lessons are underway this week for Grades 1 – 3, at the Stromlo Leisure Centre. The children are participating enthusiastically and enjoying the lessons. My thanks to Sarah Kennelly and all K–3 teachers for their support.
Boorowa Carnival
This Friday, we are taking approximately 60 children to the Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival. It promises to be an excellent day and will be a very good opportunity for the children. My thanks to Luke Gubler for coordinating our involvement, and to the staff and parents attending on the day.
Socktober
Friday next week sees our fundraising day, ‘Socktober’, take place. Children are invited to wear ‘crazy socks’ to school and bring a gold coin to school, all in an effort to raise money for St Vincent de Paul society. My thanks to our acting Religious Education Coordinator, Sarah Walsh, for organising our involvement.
Year 1 Retreat
Next Thursday our Year 1 students are having a ‘mini retreat’ at school, led by our Youth Minister Olivia Green. It will be a great day for the children and be a good experience that deepens and builds upon many of the concepts covered in the students RE lessons this year. My thanks to Olivia and to the Year 1 teachers for their support.
Assembly Times
For the remainder of this Term, and into next year, Sts Peter and Paul are trialing the new assembly time of 2.30pm. The assembly will still take place in the hall.
Two-Day Catholic Leaders’ Meeting
I am away tomorrow and Friday at a two-day meeting with all principals of Catholic schools and senior Catholic Education staff. Among other speakers, Barbara Croucher, Director of Catholic Education in Scotland, will be addressing the gathering.
Have a wonderful week with your families.
Best wishes

Social Justice - Crazy Sock Day Socktober Catholic Mission - Friday 1st November
Social Justice is defined by the Catholic Church as, “the respect for the human person and the rights which flow from human dignity.’ Catholic Social Justice teaches that all people are made in the image of God and possess an equal worth, and that each person has a right to all that is needed to allow him or her to live their full potential as intended by God.
This year, we are supporting Catholic Mission by participating in Socktober. Socktober 2024 will contribute vital funds to projects around the world, including Mongolia, where the Don Bosco Caring Center is providing hope, education, protection and guidance for young children.
On Friday 1st November, students are able to participate in Socktober in two ways:
- Wear ‘crazy socks’ and ‘sock it’ to poverty. Students are invited to wear crazy socks and make a gold coin donation.
- Kick goals for poverty. Could you score a goal against a teacher? Students are invited to donate gold coin/s and try to score a goal.
As a community, let’s join together to help Catholic Mission bring hope and dignity to people in need. Thank you.
Marian Procession and Youth Festival - Sunday 27th October, Goulburn
This weekend, all are invited to join the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn for an inspiring journey of faith and fellowship at this year's Marian procession and Youth Festival, celebrating our diverse ecumenical and multicultural communities. The procession will start with the Rosary at the St Saviour's Anglican Cathedral at 11:00am, then proceed along Bourke St, and arrive at the Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, now maintained by the Catholic Lebanese Maronite community.
The pilgrimage will conclude at the newly renovated Sts Peter & Paul's Old Cathedral, with Mass at 2:00pm, in the presence of Archbishop Christopher Prowse.
Bring along your own lunch or purchase food at the event. Tours exploring the rich history of Sts Peter & Paul's will also be available.
Gospel - Mark 10:46-52
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)
Jesus gives sight to Bartimaeus.
This passage from the Gospel of Mark draws to a close a significant section of the gospel. It stretches from 8:22 to this passage, 10:52. Like other examples in the Gospel of Mark, the stories at the beginning and end of the section are related and shed light on what they surround. Like this passage, the event at the beginning of the section is an account of the healing of a blind man. Contained within the two healings of blindness, as we have seen over the last six weeks, is an extended lesson on discipleship. Within this section, Jesus speaks about his upcoming death on three occasions and each time the disciples display their own form of blindness when they fail to understand what Jesus is trying to tell them quite explicitly. In this section, we have heard that discipleship involves suffering and hardship; it means placing one’s own needs last and the needs of others first; and that discipleship is all about faith.
In this healing of blind Bartimaeus, we see all the hallmarks of what Jesus has been trying to teach the disciples in the preceding episodes. As a blind man, Bartimaeus would be regarded as ‘imperfect’ – incomplete – and consequently in a permanent state of uncleanliness. He would not be allowed to live within the bounds of normal society, nor have contact with people. So it is that Jesus encounters Bartimaeus on the side of the road, outside the city walls as he is leaving Jericho. Learning that it is Jesus passing by, Bartimaeus calls on Jesus to help him and the crowd tries to shut him up and remind him of his status. But Jesus calls Bartimaeus to him and, placing the needs of the other first, asks ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ When Bartimaeus makes his request, Jesus announces that it is his faith that has saved him and his sight is restored. Bartimaeus, like a good disciple, then follows Jesus on the road.

Doughraiser last week
Thank you to all of those families who supported our first Doughraiser fundraising event with Domino's Mawson last Wednesday. With your amazing support, we raised $500 towards the upgrade of our school outdoor equipment and additional outdoor learning resources. The store sold 484 pizzas which was the second highest amount of pizzas sold in Canberra Domino's on a Wednesday night! Well done everyone!
A WORD FROM OUR SCHOOL LEADERS
On Monday, the 21st of October eight students were selected to go welcome the King to Canberra. First we had to go on a bus. When we arrived at the airport we had to leave our bags on the bus (for security reasons) and then we went into an aircraft hangar to eat lunch. Once we were finished, we and students from a few other schools went onto a runway to watch the King land. After he landed there was a Welcome to the Country and a smoking ceremony for the King. Afterwards he went into a black car after waving us goodbye (the car had a crown emoji number plate) then they drove away with a few other cars. We were escorted back inside the aircraft hanger to go and head to the bus. Before we left we got gift bags with colouring books, flags, keychains and more! When we arrived back at school we were picked up and went home.
It was really fun and everyone was excited to see him!

We have had a report that several large, oversize trucks are planning to use Lachlan Valley Way (between the Hume Hwy and Boorowa) on Friday morning. These trucks are large and quite slow. It might be beneficial to plan to leave 15 minutes earlier than planned to avoid stress for timely arrival in Boorowa.
Please note for all those catching the bus: As per the information pack, we will be leaving SPP at 6:30a.m. The above mentioned traffic issue will not change our scheduled leaving time.
If you ever have any questions about anything related to Sport, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Luke Gubler (luke.gubler@cg.catholic.edu.au) and hopefully we will be able to help you out!

This week Garden Club was rained out which was great for the garden but not for Garden Club who still wanted to garden in the rain. Bless them!
In the classroom, the Year 5 and 6 students started revisiting the Five Food Groups and refreshing their memories about what is in the each group and why eating from a healthy plate is good for us. The students were very engaged and asked lots of questions.
In cooking, Christmas was in the air for a few classes who received an extra session in the kitchen. Christmas crackle was on the menu. Yum!
Garden club will be on this Friday at lunch, after the eating bell. It will be announced at morning assembly.
